Wasn't the fat baldy in that ad, Gregor Fisher- better known as Rab C Nesbitt?

Shepards of Gateshead, the biggest and the best store.
Shepards of Gateshead, you get what you’re looking for,
There’s so much to see and the car park is free,
Come shopping at Shepards with the whole family!

We were brainwashed as kids by adverts

The first brainwash for me was the " honey monster " advert. Possibly the first time a non human type appeared on adverts but I could be wrong.

Here's a "Blast from the past" puzzle for you all.

Who are the two players in this photo (taken around 1973/4) who went on to enjoy lengthy careers in the Football League...?

Shouldn't be too difficult...

OK, it's Brian - on the left of the front row.

The photo is of a Peterlee and District Juniors team, and the other lad is from Blackhall. He played for 3 well-known teams, and quite a few years in the First Division during his long pro career.

And that's all the clues you're getting...!

He was 10 years older than Brian Honour, and was playing in the Villa first team when that photo was took.

The other lad in the school-team photo never signed for Pools, despite playing over 100 matches at the Victoria Ground.

It ain't Kenny mate.

I'll keep the clues coming. For instance, if you're googling some of the details you already know remember that people from Blackhall, Horden etc get their birth REGISTERED in the DISTRICT they were born in.

Kenny Bottles · **Posted:** Tue Dec 19, 2023 4:12 pm

Here's another clue - and no, he's not the gadgie who likes sunbeds..!!!

At least you should now be able to work out where he's sat in the schoolboy-team photo I posted...

That's the boy.

So he's from Blackhall in the district of Easington, and he's played for Stoke City. He's also the same year at junior school as Brian Honour, but not the same school.

Perhaps the photo of him in his playing days contains enough information to find out another club he played for. It's certainly not a Stoke shirt he's wearing.

He also has 5 caps for England U21s - and scored a goal in one game.

Oh, and he played against Pools four times in his career, 2 at home, and 2 away - but all were played at the Victoria Ground...!

He was also transferred twice at a cost to the new club each time of £450,000.

Making him one of the most successful North-East players you've never heard of.

Anyway, no more clues. Hopefully someone will get the answer today, which is now Wednesday so I'm off to bed.......

You could use Google to assist you. There's enough info in the clues to use "In The Mad Crowd" to get his name too. Even the picture of him playing can get you the name if you're a bit savvy on the internet.

Final clue: His surname rhymes with Manson.

Our constabulary can't solve one in a month of Sundays - unless it's someone committing a so-called "hate crime" on Facebook.

if they did a crime story now it would be a 5 part epic of over three hours duration of each part to end on a cliffhanger of the CPS throwing the case out.

That’s what I can’t stand about crime series nowadays, they go on forever and most of it is inconsequential tosh that could be cut down and have no impact on the programme whatsoever with their tedious middle class sub plots.

like lgbt relationships or a mixed race marriage where the food they eat always looks from a veggie or vegan cook book in the perfect tidy house that i never have had or even visited. you know what will be next they,ll all have electric cars and comments about climate crisis will be flowing from their lips at every opportunity. there is no drama now without a message for their propaganda machine. bring back the sweeney, benny hill and the proper commedians.
