Ben Thatcher vs Pedro Mendes

Anyone see Thatcher leather Mendes tonight on MotD? Probably the worst challenge I've seen in ages, just ran into him and ran his arm into Mendes' face. Only got a yellow too.

Actually, I think you're maybe thinking of John Fashanu doing Gary Mabbutt.

Absolutely no need for that in football...they should throw the book at Thatcher, like they did at Paul Davis(i remember now, thanks everyone!) didnt he get a 9 match ban?

poolpower · **Posted:** Thu Aug 24, 2006 12:47 am

pre meditated assault
he should do time for it
just because it was on a football field does not excuse it from being anything else
if it happened on the street he would be jailed unprovoked attack

i hate all thatchers

The ball has gone so Thatcher decides to use Mendes as a brake, twatting him with his elbow AND his knee in the process.
No one can be sure he meant to cause deliberate harm, but there's no doubt whatsoever it was a cowardly gesture aimed at protecting himself at the other player's expense. Football's equivalent of reckless driving if you like.
Worth prolly 12-18 months if convicted!

news says the FA are looking at it

full right fist followed by the elbow then clattered him in to the hordings
he was a maniac

when you look at Dyer and Bowyer this was worse that that
he deserves a ban and the ref should be dropped too for only giving a yellow

Stuart Pearce: "What happened on Wednesday was indefensible. Any form of discipline will be discussed at board level, kept internal and we will move on from there. Ben is distraught by this. He now realises just how bad the challenge was and his face was ashen when I spoke to him yesterday. He is disgusted with himself and there is no way I, or anyone at my club, can defend it. People are having a go at him but, in all honesty, he has not got a leg to stand on."

Fair comment I suppose. None of your Arsene Wenger ostrich stuff.
In his first interview Peace said he had not yet seen the replay of the incident so he reserved his comments until later.

Thatcher has made a written apology to Mendes.
