HOT WEATHER
Anyone else sick to death about advice and the fear caused by hot temperaturers. Its getting silly now with schools shut and ever greggs closing. Mind you thats a real bonus. Anybody willing to moan and groan about the heat and its dangers seem to be getting air time. Any other cynics out there think this is a good reason to increase green policies. A couple of weeks back we had our heating on. That never got a mention even with temperatures lower than average.

Got to disagree Accy, both professionally and personally.

Professionally - I'm a secondary school teacher, I work in an old school without the benefit of Air Con, and it's very difficult. We're in the red heat zone in Northants- school is still open, but we sent the majority of kids home at 1.30 yesterday, same today and tomorrow - though staff are expected to stay in school whilst a handful of kids are still on site, until the end of the school day.

Personally - My Mum who still lives in the town, was admitted to North Tees last night, with issues that have been exasperated by the extreme temperatures- so been quite a stressful last 24 hours, (particularly living 3 and a half hours away).

Seen on Sky News that its it'll be the hottest temperature ever recorded in an urban environment. I think the Mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki might disagree!

Yeah it’s hot…but the hottest day in 50 years is a sign it’s far from the norm and basically freak weather.
The summer of 76 passed me by…double leg break and 16 weeks in hip to toe plaster…proper plaster.
So from May till September..it was feet up

Still say it’s ramped up for the eco loons to give them a hot weather climax. :!:

My sympathy to Kettering as my mum's in her 90's and struggling atm, but this overreaction to 48 hours of hot weather and Cobra briefings about the effects really is gaslighting on a large scale, people decades ago saying we were doomed within years, and ice caps gone altogether, pictures of the disappearing ozone layers and droughts in Africa, these things have been happening long before we walked the planet, we have no control over the sun's output and a sudden fall off in its production we would all freeze to death overnight.
I'll turn my air con off in the car tomorrow and that might just buy us another month. Warmer weather means we use less fuel for heating and our CO2 output goes down markedly. But hey-ho we should all be shivering to death and be happy eh?

Thanks Derwent & Paulus

Sounds like my Mum's on the mend.
She was a bit delirious yesterday, basically the heat reacting with some of the meds she's on.
They took her in and ran tests last night and again this morning - and now she's back home.
Spoke to her tonight and she's a lot more like her old self. Just needs to take it easy and stay well hydrated until it cools down a bit.

If anyone is suffering with the heat get down to Seaton…I take the dogs down after tea and it’s the one place in the country where the heat is neutered……warm in our garden but I actually put a fleece on for the beach…odd but ironic…might move the bed down there overnight.

You adapt to it plus most public places have AC even in the schools albeit they close for the 3 hottest months of the year to cut down on the cost of electricity, currently it’s the rainy season although yet to see any, it’s very humid and sweaty touching 40c with the humidity. My partners family don’t have AC many Thais don’t as by their standards it’s expensive therefore rely on fans.
Currently sitting in the patio having a beer with a fan which is good enough to keep me cool, nighttime AC is essential in the bedroom though for me though.
Never ceases to amaze me a few days of hot weather and the country goes into meltdown, then it rains and there’s floods, in winter a day of snow shuts the country down. In my day we just got on with it hail, rain, snow, sunshine etc. We never had a day of school because of the weather trudging through snow, ice, rain etc, I always remember the hot summers. We have developed into a bunch of softies in our centrally heated house which in the summer because of the insulation feel like greenhouse.

Camden Council are banning AC and ordering the removal of AC from houses who have it installed….the Councillors talk like it’s the Devils work.

We are being encouraged or made to fit heat pumps, they work exactly the same way in cooling mode. Both use a closed-loop refrigeration cycle to extract heat from indoors and dump it outside. The only difference is that a heat pump has a reversing valve, allowing it to reverse the process and pull heat in during the winter.
Many public buildings I have worked in use AC.

They're very inefficient in older houses though as radiators aren't sized for their lower operating temperatures and homes need to be pretty well insulated and leakproof to keep the heat in.
If they were the answer people would be flicking to buy them.
Wonder what will happen when gas appliances are banned totally in domestic premises and we're all reliant on electricity, surely the price of Lecky won't go up will it? Or supply will be controlled by Big Brother to keep us all in our place.

Big Brother is another question to how many would comply. going off the covid restrictions i think the government would have little to worry about as so many do not mind being controlled even id some of it made little or real sense.

Your temperatures are way lower than what I experience here Harrogate, maybe it’s because Samui is an island and gets the sea breezes all the time.

I don’t have skin like leather, you only get skin like leather if you sit in the sun all day, I never sunbathe in fact not many people do, tourists, very rarely see them lying in the sun on the beach etc. certainly not locals as a suntan as seen as you have been working in the rice fields and come from a poor background.

But you still have to heat the water because it comes out of the ground Luke warm at best…and when we all have to use it, we could have a problem, it ain’t cheap to install.

The UK government primarily wants you to install air source heat pumps (specifically air-to-water systems). These transfer warmth from the outside air into your central heating and hot water. They forget to mention you need an external unit.

EDF the French state owned company are building nuclear power stations for us at Hinckley Point and Sizewell so the U.K. doesn’t need to build them.

prefer to see us building our own than relying on a foreign company to do it for us. shows how things have changed as once we would be doing the building with other countries paying for that priveledge.

We don’t have the expertise or the knowledge to build a nuclear power station, although after the HS2 debacle could we build one with out massive costs overruns. Hinkley Point C is significantly over budget and behind schedule. Originally estimated at £18 billion when approved in 2016, the cost has now surged to around £35 billion (in 2015 prices), which translates to up to £49 billion in today's money.
We abandoned it in the dash for gas, very short sighted.

Still don’t see anything special about the summer weather except for a loss of rain….seems if it happens in the the South East it’s news…..and anywhere else in the country doesn’t matter…..generally speaking I wear mu shorts but still put a fleece on morning and evening when walking the dogs morning and evening, the North sea is NOT the Med.

its not exactly hot either on the moors at 9pm either. the temperature says its about 14 degrees but its back with the sweater on and a warm jacket. it might have been hotter than normal but eventually you get used to it. obviously there has been no excess heat related deaths as the news channels would be all over this as it suits their agenda.

Of course we've got the expertise to build nuclear power plants, Rolls Royce are already contracted to install mini reactor plants in Wales and other parts of the UK including Hartlepool I believe. We'd be far better economically pushing the nuclear agenda than the wind and solar, there's nothing to say that the earth won't wobble a bit in it's axis and we get a prolonged spell of cooling. Nuclear is cleaner and way more reliable.

Rolls Royce don't have an approved design and we don't have an idea of how much its going to cost. The idea with nuclear is you pick a proven design and replicate it across as many sites as possible. Sizewell B has worked well for many years and is applying for a 20 year life extension. Hinkley C was supposed to be of the same design and Sizewell D but electricity industry privatisation got in the way. We are now repeating the mistakes that were made in the 1960s of all reactors being of different designs and all earning the 'first of a kind' price tag.

They're in the final stages of the Regulatory approval process though and are contracted to government to build and deliver these small modular reactors. They design and build the small reactors for nuclear subs so they know what they're doing albeit on a small scale.
It makes sense to build these as it will be quicker and they'll all be the same so should help keep costs lower too.

Yes the U.K. has the expertise but not enough qualified people to build nuclear facilities, when the U.K. abandoned nuclear energy all the personnel with those skills passed away and were lost forwever, the U.K. is playing catch up now. Hinckley C is French designed by the company owned by the French government likewise the new one at Sizewell will be. Hartlepool’s Station is also owned by the same company EDF, Électricité de France.
If the oil and gas industry takes of again we have no facilities nor enough skilled labour to build the modules in the U.K. There was 4/5 rig building companies on Teesside now there is probably only one.

I don't think the future will be huge plants that take ages to build, the SMRs that Rolls Royce are in the final stages of approval for can produce enough power for about 1 million homes per unit.
Don't think we'll ever see oil and gas modules built in the UK again as I don't think they'll approve anymore fixed structures, it'll be all tie backs and floating facilities.

It will be FPSOs, Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading vessels, they will be built abroad, I worked on a few, North Sea Producer, Glas Dowr, Triton on Teeside then the Bonga at Newcastle. Basically converted oil tankers where the modules were built locally and ‘lifted’ on to the tankers from abroad but now the whole process will be down some where like South Korea, loads cheaper labour.
