Based on what is publicly available so far, I don’t think the position is nearly as clear-cut as some of the online commentary suggests.

The apparent dispute is this:

* Will Harris’ playing contract reportedly expired when Halifax’s season ended on 5/6 May 2026.
* Halifax are said to have had a one-year option in the contract.
* They reportedly exercised that option on 30 May, before 1 June.
* Harris’ representatives appear to argue that once the contract expired in early May, the option clause also ceased to exist, so there was nothing left to exercise.

The argument in Halifax’s favour is different.

There are football registration rules which often require clubs to submit retained lists and exercise options by around 1 June (the exact wording depends on the competition and the standard player contract being used). Halifax appear to have relied on those rules, and reports suggest The FA accepted the option notice despite it being served after the contract’s stated expiry date.

Where the legal issue lies

This is really a question of contract law, not simply FA procedure.

There are two possible interpretations:

Interpretation 1 – Harris’ position

* Contract expired on 6 May.
* Once expired, every clause within it—including the option clause—expired too.
* Therefore Halifax could not revive the contract on 30 May.
* Harris became a free agent immediately.

This is the view reportedly being advanced by those close to the player.

Interpretation 2 – Halifax’s position

* The option clause survives until the recognised football deadline (around 1 June).
* The club complied by exercising it on 30 May.
* The player therefore remained contracted for another year.

Is the FA deadline decisive?

Not necessarily.

Even if FA registration rules allow a club until 1 June to notify an extension, a court or arbitration panel could still ask:

Did the contract itself give Halifax a continuing contractual right to exercise the option after the stated expiry date?

That depends on the precise wording.

For example, contracts sometimes say:

“The Club may exercise the option by giving written notice on or before 1 June…”

If Harris’ contract contains wording like that, Halifax’s case is considerably stronger.

If instead it simply states:

“This agreement expires on 6 May 2026”

without expressly preserving the option beyond that date, Harris’ argument becomes much stronger.

The fact the FA accepted it

One interesting point is the reports that the FA has accepted Halifax’s exercise of the option. That suggests the registration authorities believe, at least administratively, that the notice was valid.

However, that does not necessarily settle the contractual dispute. Players have previously challenged registration decisions through arbitration.

My assessment

From what has been reported:

* I don’t think this is an obvious “Halifax are right” case.
* Equally, I don’t think it is an obvious “Harris is free” case.
* The outcome is likely to depend almost entirely on the exact wording of the option clause in Halifax’s standard National League contract.

If the contract expressly says the option can be exercised up to 1 June, I would expect Halifax to have the stronger legal position.

If the contract merely expired on 6 May with no wording preserving the option beyond expiry, then Harris’ argument that the option died with the contract is a serious one.

Given the amount of discussion among journalists and lawyers already, I would not be surprised if this ultimately required an FA arbitration rather than being resolved simply by reference to the handbook.

So who paid him from 6th May until 30th May?
The FA rules may require the re-registration by the 1st June but it would appear he was unemployed from 6th May and I'd imagine employment law would say that you can't exercise a contract extension where no contract exists, they should have told the player or his representatives they were exercising the option before his contract ran out. IMO.
I'd imagine Employment Law trumps FA Rules on player contracts which must be subject to such Laws.
I wonder if the very early finish to the season has caught them out?
He's not going to play for them again regardless, I think they're clutching at FA straws and trying to escape the wrath of their supporters.
Apparently they also exercised another players option late, and it turned out they'd actually announced they'd released him.

I honestly can't see pools signing Harris without a legal team checking out contract laws, and being absolutely sure they were right. Everything Landon has done since he came in has been professional, no way are they winging this.

So did his contract state that the club had an option until the Ist of June to renew his contract..and was the player aware of this and the relevant dates…?
If the contract just states it ended in early June, was the player being paid after the original June end of contract date…? If not, the player was surely entitled to seek further employment elsewhere.
Was there ‘communication’ between the two party’s during the two dates in June …?
Would the exercising of the further year be on prearranged terms of remuneration or would there be a new set of terms to be negotiated which surely would constitute a new negotiation…?

I'll repeat what the Halifax fan said on X, as he cut right to the chase.

"We had a year option in his contract, we triggered it after the contract had expired. In FA rules that's allowed but according to common contract law it isn't and so he's a free agent but we're arguing it to try get compensation."

It's a money grab, pure and simple. Halifax will have known for the past month that the player has no intention of being there for the new season.

 I’ve just put something similar on the other board. If the contract has expired, then the player registration expires too, therefore he would have become a free agent at the point that the contract expired. This appears to be the 6th May.

The only way that Halifax are going to get around this is if they have specified in their contract that it ends on 5th May, but they hold the rights to trigger the extension option past that date, and to at least the 26th May.

This would mean that they need to explain how Harris’s salary and employment rights were preserved during those 20 days. Given the problems that we had with trying to get Chris Maguire’s contract approved based on a pay as you play deal, the National League don’t approve contracts that deviate from the standard, and have windows where players would not be paid, so they would be unlikely to approve such an odd clause.

Halifax have another player, Jay Turner Cooke, having the same issues about options on his contract. He's from South Shields, I think Halifax would implode if he rocked up here as well :D

Surely a contract extension has to be agreed by both the club and the player. If he does not wish to stay after his original contract he is free to leave as he does not wish to take up the extra yeae option.

I’m no legal expert but think that Halifax have been very naive in this situation. Before the guy signed the contract the club put in a provision of a contract extension of 12 months . This is totally fine and common. However, it makes sense that the club must negotiate the new contact before the old one expires or the player could be kept waiting for months. Think pools would have checked this out before signing the guy

Just ask them how much they’re after for a player who apparently doesn’t play for them anymore.

it does not really matter who is right or wrong here. if halifax are proved to be in the right they still have a player on there hands who wants away and knows he has one or more club to go to. lets hope we do not get legged up next year with these contract extentions if there is any.

I was a bit wary of Bromby first arrival.
But it's all starting to take shape now.
Deffo upgrades in the recruitment so far.

All credit to Smithy on changing the operations and employment criteria.

I'm confident this turns into success on the pitch.

If the contract has an option clause, it is written into the contract that the club can trigger a 1 year extension on the same terms. The player can’t refuse that extension, they have already pre-agreed to it when they signed the original contract.

If the club want to alter the terms of the extension, either the length or the wage, then it becomes a negotiation. But the option needs to be triggered prior to the contract expiry.

Same as if the contract is ending without an option for further extension, the club can offer a new contract, but it it up to the player if they want to accept it or not.

I honestly don't know how you can trigger an option on a player who's contract has been allowed to expire.
Think Halifax will end up losing the player and face by owning up to their error, or they take it through legal avenues and lose the player, face, and cash when they lose and I'm pretty sure the player's costs would be awarded too.

feel its more about the purse itself being bigger and we are shopping at least one step up from the last few seasons. it surely is not going to be that difficult to gain those extra few points and finishing a few places higher than last seasons team did with there sub standard managers and lack of attacking options.
