Apparently a new wind farm is to be built which will be interconnected to the European mainland
I thought from the Government’s sales banter we were just building these to secure our own fuel sources from outside influence…??

I think the direction of travel is to get away from energy reliance on the Arabs / Russia etc.
I am happy to cosy up to the northern Europeans.

Correct Jamie…and the vast majority of wind turbines and solar panels are imported from China, it only makes sense if we are producing these products ourselves instead being held hostage to states like China who now have control over a good part of our power supply caused by basically ignorant and gullible politicians who haven’t got a clue.

I see this as a very dangerous move. According to Milliband we are going to have carbon free electricity from 2030. That means no gas fired power stations operating. So the current situation where all electricity is priced relative to the price of electricity from gas will have to change. We've heard many times that the price of gas has gone up so the price of electricity also has to go up. This windfarm will ensure that electricity in the UK will continue to priced relative to the price of continental gas as the windfarm can sell to Europe on that basis.

The big rises in gas prices over the last couple of decades was engineered by the oil and gas companies. The UK used to be self sufficient in gas, in fact there was excess capacity. The rules were changed around 1990, at the behest of the gas companies, to allow gas to be burnt in power stations. At that time we had an excess of production and gas prices were low. Gas resources were increasingly consumed by the electricity market until a few years later we were short of gas and we had to connect to the European gas market where prices were higher. The price of gas shot up.

In economic theory its all about system marginal pricing. In layman's terms we pay the highest price from all sources. This windfarm move locks us into paying high prices for electricity for the foreseeable.

The U.K. doesn’t own iny facilities to produce electricity, it’s all bought from private companies who have only 2 aims profit and dividends to shareholders. There is plenty of oil and gas left in the North Sea but why develop it as there might not be sales for it. When the U.K. was self sufficient it still had to buy it from private companies, another one of Thatchers mistakes selling our oil and gas off.
Hindsight sight is great but we should have followed Norways example, keeping ownership of their oil and gas creating the Sovereign Wealth Fund,as of late 2025/early 2026, the fund's assets reached approximately $2.1 trillion, significantly boosting Norway's economy. The fund's size translates to over $340,000 for every Norwegian citizen.

All oil and gas in the North Sea is owned by the Crown and licensed to operators on a field by field basis. We produced gas in the 1990s that was sold into the electricity market at 10 p/therm. The market price is now 80 p/therm.

It’s owned by the Crown not sure it’s sold in the form of licences, tax is from the oil and gas companies is the only revenue the U.K. government receives. British Gas was privatised in 1986 so the U.K. had to buy the gas from them after that whether it was from Noth Sea or elsewhere. The U.K. started buying gas from Norway in 2001, Norway now supplies over 50% of the U.K. gas.

ALL companies strive to make a profit, that’s how it works…unless funded by the Government and that’s like getting financial advice of the Magic Roundabout.

I can’t disagree Snowy but Norway has appeared to make decent earnings from their oil and gas industry rather than private companies.

I've just signed up to a new energy deal where the gas is over 30% cheaper - meanwhile electric prices have gone up a little. So the electric thing is working out great innit....

Meanwhile, today I've just had to buy an electric oven (built in) as gas ones are no longer available. There is a choice of about two!!

Norway invested some of their government take of oil and gas income into their Sovereign Wealth Fund, the UK invested ALL of its income in oil and gas on benefits, and????
