Following the controversy about this crazy system of Managers being classed as coaches and apparently having others deciding who the signings are.
I believe a Manager should be the one who recruit's players, not some Statto with a catalogue…
Who thought this was a good idea?

These new fangled business owners who take over a football club probably think it is a good idea!

I agree with you Snowy, manager in charge of players alongside a first team coach.

Hopefully the new owner of HUFC goes with the latter.

could never see what the problem was by having a manager and there assistant with a chief scout who oversees the number of other scouts the club has. that worked for over 100 years in the game until these new owners came about adopting the continental approach of calling a manager a coach. suppose its all about titles of employees that make em sound more important than they really are. director of football, what the hell is that about.

It's a thing that's come over from Europe isn't it? It makes sense on paper but you're relying on everyone being aligned and both the manager and Sporting Director/whatever they're called being competent at their job

A bit like ordering a three piece suite and the shop sending you the one they like…and you’re supposed to be grateful.

And yet Clough and Taylor seemed to work this way. Clough was the man manager and motivator but it seemed to be Taylor who suggested who they should buy. It seemed to work pretty well for them and they were never quite as good without each other.

The bonkers hire/fire circus in the PL is a joke. The new Chelsea "manager" has been given a 6 year contract........i give him 6 months.
As for Man Utd they could do worse than getting in Warnock until the end of the season to bang a few heads together and tell Radcliffe to *uck off!

Thank goodness Pools have had managerial stability over the past few years

They were two long term mates working together and Clough having the final say, is nothing like nowadays, where some nobody dumps a player in the managers lap.
Franlkly, Cloughie would not be impressed.

That’s why Clough never got the England job, it was either his way or no way.

As it should be…..Cloughie was never popular with the ‘blazers’ at the FA, but what did they know…?

he was closer to the fans who paid there money to watch rather than the freeloaders who did not know what a turnstile was.

I suppose it all comes down to the ability of the individuals concerned and how much funding is available. The likes of Brentford seem to do very well using this system. Whatever manager they seem to appoint (and they are usually unproven) they seem to do well, which must be at least partly to do with how they are very well run behind the scenes with regard to recruitment etc.

Brentford were a familiar fixture round the bottom of the old fourth division alongside us for a time. Maybe a bit of investment and a more modern approach is the key?

Cyril Knowles.
Pop Robson.
It worked and was cheapish.

And the manager should always have the final say on signings.

To many nobody's on the sidelines with I pads who have zero influence on the outcome of a game.

agree, but i do think the manager or chief coach will have the final say in any signings. if not then how can clubs sack them if they have players they do not rate forced upon them by the committee of laptops.

A manager generally knows who or what player he wants to sign….and should not be left to a motley collection of on line catalogue gazers/statisticians who know next to nowt about the game, but hold sway.
Statistics don’t show a players character or attitude, which are far more important.

You don't need a HR Team in the non league football industry.
Absolute waste of wages which could be used for the main objective The team.
The most important part of any team.

Fcuk the hanger onners burgling a wage.

stats might show that as players characters and attitudes tend to be known quickly across the game. thats not to say they should be the deciding factor on a signing.
