Reeves, grilled by the BBC, was asked how owners of electric cars would log their mileage to pay their new surcharge and how the payment could be paid.
It soon became apparent she hadn’t got a clue, as she stammered and faltered through the interview.
It then quickly transpired that they’ve come out with a policy that they haven’t worked out yet how to how to actually implement …..talk about jokers.

Many electric car owners were already thinking about switching back to petrol and diesel cars, this will just slow down the numbers buying electric as we all know it'll start at 3p per mile but will increase massively year on year as the motorist must be fleeced by governments of all persuasions.
Remember governments telling us all to buy cleaner diesels and offering incentives then punishing us for driving more polluting vehicles, then it was trying to push us all into electric and guess what now you get punished.
It's interesting when pressed on details of newly announced policy they can't provide details.
It's rumoured that the mileage checks will be done by MOT garages at the annual test, for newer cars which don't need an MOT owners will have to go to an MOT test station to have the mileage check done - how much will the MOT test go up for them to look at the odometer and register the mileage in a database? How much will the simple entry into the database cost newer car owners?

With Millibean in charge of energy we have a green zealot for nonsense like this.. I suspect the end game is to eliminate cars as we know it and replace them the glorified golf buggy’s to tootle around town, but not much further ….all on the sacrificial altar of getting the bragging rights to be as green as possible..

You have a mileage check when you get the mot but the issue is in the first 3 years. Even with the extra 3p cost it's much cheaper to run an ev.

Remember back in the old days of going down the scrappy and getting a spare speedo for my car. Put it on for a few months to lower the actual mileage of the car without the need to clock the original one. Cost nothing if you bought something else as they fitted inside my long overcoat pocket.

Fuel duty is currently 52.95p a litre for petrol and diesel so that's about 5p a mile or so for a run-of-the-mill car. 3p a mile for EVs that are charging at home and paying next to nothing for the electric are still quids in.

Easy, they know if you own one and like a tax return you have to complete a questionnaire or take your vehicle to MOT Testing Centre annually and submit it to the DVLC.
Remember when diesel was cheaper than petrol and we all bought diesel cars, the government about turned and increased the duty on diesel.
There are devices available on the net which can turn the digital milage back albeit they can plug a device in and it checks the milage a gearbox has done.

but it goes against this governments policy of green this and that. is it a case of its fine to be green if you are prepared to pay for it like the levy we pay on utility bills. you lot have to go green but do not expect much government help to do it.

do not worry they,ll have another device up their sleeves to check nileages that you have to purchase by law to be fitted on your milkfloat and all new ones will have it permanently fitted and sealed so it cannot be touched.

All these complex tax rules, can they government not just simplify things!

Every car owner, petrol or electric pays the same road tax to have their vehicle on the road.

Simple!

Anyone using petrol will be pay more the more mileage they do, the more the government get from the tax on petrol.
And have a rate for charging electric vehicles which again the government can have a levy on, the more times you charge your car, the more they get.

Simple!

And for this stupid mansion tax, council tax rethink!
Pay tax on your income based on what you earn.
And pay another say call it local tax again based on what you earn.

Therefore those with a large income pay more than a lower paid worker.
A fair system!

Yes the simpler the better.
On the Mansion tax, the introduction will have very little impact at first because the majority of houses are worth less than £2million. However as an intro it can now be extended and who knows what extension to it this lot will arrive at. How long before it is applied to properties over half a million quid.

Those who have a solar panels I think need a smart meter.
So problem solved for the government because a different rate can be applied to the charging outlet.

derwent is spot on, when the government introduce a new tax, you can bet your bottom dollar that nearly everyone will fall under its evilness sooner rather than later.

And as for this pay per mile, that will be introduced and once in place and up and running, slowly but surely petrol car owners will fall under its spell and weaned off the annual car tax charge.

In generations to come our children will not be able to travel out of their immediate area, it'll be like going back to the 1500's, travelling will be for the wealthy and nobility only, flying around the World to their pointless meetings which achieve sod all other than they can slap each other on the back and pretend they're making a difference to the planet. It'll be like a sordid version of the Hunger Games.

Cheaper for now…but once the numbers change they’ll be milked mercilessly.

Exactly that 3p per mile is just the starting point, give it a couple of years and it'll be up to 10p per mile.

In fact the next step is to get the whole populus spying on each other, it's happening to a certain degree already, if you don't put your bin out at the right angle, time and place the "spy police" will be onto your case within minutes banning you from emptying for the next month.

Don get me going about bloody bins….I put the recyclable bin out last week and the wife gave me a plastic lid to stick on the top of the recyclables….picks the bin up ti find it still full and a Norte pointing out the little life was ‘hard’ plastic and you can only put ‘soft’ plastic in the bin.
A note would have sufficed and the box left on the top.
Checked out the Council’s website and found there is no mention of soft or hard plastic, just …plastic.

we have the same thing regarding plastics. you need to do some course on plastics now before putting the bins out. not all plastic is just soft ot hard there is plenty inbetween.

Now and again our bin men have a look what's in the recycling bin, on one such inspection I watched as he put my bin back on the path without it being emptied and slapped a sticker on it. I went straight out and asked why it wasn't being emptied and he said there's a greasy pizza box in there, so I took the pizza box out and said there you go and he refused to empty it and said it was too late the sticker was on and it had been registered in the system so the bin didn't get eptied

Be also said another infringement would result in a visit from the Council Environmental Department - a neighbour had 1 such visit at 0730hrs one morning, the officer was met with a torrential of abuse as they had a toddler which kept them awake for most nights.
If you look at most of the packaging on goods nowadays a good percentage say not to recycle at home, many of them are items which 12 months ago we were told we must recycle at home with potential fines for not doing so. It seems the profitability of recycling has reduced substantially as sorting and most difficult of all, disposing of difficult to recycle products makes it not financially worthwhile. Basically it's all about the pounds not saving the planet.

bin men seem to be the biggest jobsworths we have to put up with now. once they gave you a list of what goes in each one but never had one dor years now even though they have moved the goalposts on some items. ask em and you get the usual 2025 answer, check on line. the bloody line is for my conveniance not the councils who should be paying me if i have to go down that way.

Paying by the mile will eventually be the norm for all road users imho.

They’ll get round to it…a walking tax if wearing designer footwear….no shoe tax for wellies…till they realise farmers wear them then they’ll be put in the high tax bracket.

it certainly happened in that covid period where neighbours reported neighbours for breaking the rules. nothing worse than a snitch unless its something really serious.
