Pie and guacamole - as one ex-Hartlepool MP is alleged to have thought he got served.

These days he's waiting to get served with a court summons.

A beast's heart - with the tubes removed- slowly braised in a stew with lambs livers, crusted-over baked dumplings and assorted winter veg?

Hells bells! I always thought that was my Mams invention. I didn't realise that other poor buggers had to eat that slop because they were starving after school in the 80's.

You'll be telling me next that she didn't come up with corned beef hash, or cauliflower cheese á la Knorre.

Depends how you made it, don’t scrimp on the onions and corn beef, no watery gravy either…me mam was a cook and did it for a living …..I still long for her scotch eggs…happy days.
Cauliflower cheese we wouldn’t touch…my brother said it was a brain with custard on…the thought put us off alongside me dads curry concoctions …the only people who’d eat it was him and our border collie and he barked with an Indian accent.

and make sure the corned beef hash is burned on the top as thats the best part. cauliflower is fine without the cheese as long as you do not need a sharp knife to cut it. broccoli is one of the foods of satan we never saw as kids.

 I'm quite partial to a bit of broccoli but you're right - I think I was middle-aged before I first tasted them.
Then again, I've learned to like brussels sprouts too but hated them as a kid.

could be you lose your tastebuds as you get older so you eat and drink anything. mine seem to have gone the other way by living in a garlic and sprout zone. wonder if being T total has anything to do with it.

I think you develop your palate as you get older rather than losing your taste buds. Back in the day vegetables were over-boiled rather than left with a bit of a crunch and freshness. Most food was so bland that tomato sauce, brown sauce and Worcester sauce was always on the table. That's why we became an nation of curry lovers.

Love sprouts, just little cabbages with an attitude……..but broccoli….best thing you can do with it is coat it in hard varnish and paint it to look like a tree for a model train set.
