Apparently there are no air defence missiles on the base, none at all…yet we’ve been shipping them out to Ukraine by thr bucket load…..by all means send Ukraine missiles, but only when we have sufficient to defend our assets.

Beyond a joke, isn't it? Remember last year a bunch Palestine Action hippy types walked into RAF Brize Norton through a gap in a rickety wooden fenceand disabled two RAF planes by spraying paint into their engines. Cost the good ol tax payer well over over a million quid to repair the aircraft.

The ship in question is still tied up in Portsmouth….surely they should be on standby for events like this…and how long will it take to get to Cyprus..?

got to wait till the health and safety bods get off first and see if the ship passes these rules and regs. then the captain will have to prove how diverse the crew are with a certain percentage of box tickers on board.

I understand that all of the chemists shops in the vicinity of Portsmouth Harbour have exhausted their stocks of seasickness tablets and are awaiting resupply.

Surely a couple of ships should have been detached to the area when all this build up started…but seeing as we have only half a dozen active we have a problem.

In 1982 we had over 100 frigates and destroyers….and the Tory’s were the biggest cutters of the fleet after Thatcher departed…the two aircraft carriers were ordered by Tony Blair.

Not so much Rule Britannia…more like Fool Britannia.

The UK's Royal Navy carrier strike capability is currently constrained by maintenance issues, personnel shortages, and a limited number of F-35B jets, resulting in both HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales often being unavailable simultaneously. Serious mechanical problems, including propeller shaft failures, have left the carriers in repair or "extended readiness" (effectively mothballed).

Been reading the wrong stuff…we need Air defence Destroyers/frigates, the carriers are irrelevant.
We had loads and now we’re scraping the barrel, the one the may send won’t be leaving till next week at the earliest….after the event.
Pathetic show all round.

Just think of what we had in the 2nd World War.
Country is more or less defenceless now!

I guess their soft arsed lefty government are good mates with our soft arsed lefty government who are doing exactly the same. Just imagine what could happen if the Greens get elected? We'd have the RAF defending Iran and we'd be sending weapons to the Ayatollahs.

No air defences on the base says it all really, it's pretty much considered a holiday camp and cushy posting. Just hang on chaps we'll get someone there to help out in a couple of weeks!
This shows how lax successive governments have taken defence and our military as being an unnecessary expense by reducing our capabilities to virtually nothing. Time to start taking defence seriously and a start would be getting some of these NEET youths conscripted into National Service.

National Service, are you joking? Young people now are screwed over in many ways already, they don’t need National bloody Service, anyway- it won’t happen, that plan of Sunak’s was silly, stupid and ill thought out, just a gimmick.

Loads of things.

Upset their education. Are the ones going to Uni exempt? That’s about 50% of them.

And the rest, if they don’t want to go (which they won’t) you’re going to get loads of surly pissed off youths twiddling about not wanting to be there, causing bother, not producing etc.

It’s a crap idea from a bygone age.

thats before they play the mental health card. must admit i would not have fancied being called up 60 years ago and breathed a sigh of relief when they stopped it.

.I shared a portacabin site office in the late 70’s, with a bloke then in his forties..( I was a pup) and he mentioned how he was a bit of a tearaway. When called up he reported to start his National Service in Oswestry and decided to be a smart arse with the MP’s…..he said it was the biggest mistake of his life, they broke him down and rebuilt him..
Changed him for the better…he was a hard nut ….but a reasoning hard nut after they straightened him out.

I know many wouldn't want to do it but it would maybe spur them on to find work and start contributing to society and the public coffers.
Dossing about on benefits and getting into bother isn't doing them or the country any good so maybe not such a daft idea.

Nearly 25% of teenagers had a mental illness in the U.K. some receiving benefits, there would be queue a mile long outside the GP Surgery if they reintroduced National Service

It works in plenty of other countries so no reason why it couldn't work here. Are they genuinely suffering from mental health issues or playing the system? Is mental health the new bad back?
Having a worthwhile job might actually relieve some mental health issues also.
