Introducing the pair late on against tired legs would appear to be logical but could it also be that Feaths was attempting to protect them from coming to harm earlier in the game? Any opposition coach watching the highlights could readily see the impact that the pair had and thus be weighing up his options of how to nullify them, the obvious way being to kick them up in the air. Another option would be to bring them on at different stages of the game.
The long term answer is of course to recruit a couple of more creative midfielders.
