A last bit of Hartlepool's railway history went this week from the Mainsforth Terrace site …all that was left were light stanchions that were flattened by a bulldozer this week, to make way for houses.
Used to terrify me as a little kid with the steam coming up behind the walls from the engines …and the old feller holding me over Newburn Bridge as the steam came up…the irresponsible twat.

I mentioned this before, I was in a pub in Seaton a few months back, 2 couples came in ordered 2 pints and 2 shorts and mixer £20 for the round. No one can afford Tomspend that much every time, have the pubs priced themselves out of the market or has the rise in the minimum wage and energy cost forced them to put the prices up that much ?

The National Insurance rise on employers has made a big impact on smaller businesses and forcing them to cut back on staff, not helped by the rise in the minimum wage…also food/drink costs have rocketed in the shops…I like my mortadella ham and has always been priced at £1.99 for the past three years…in 6 months it’s went up to £2.99…ridiculous, so I refuse to buy it…but it applies to most food products.

if they had a second drink it would be another purple note and if they walked to the chippy then two more would be gone. Nip onto an arcade for a few minutes at least another would leave the wallet therefore its £100 quid spent for about a single hour at seaton. its down to us earning much more but the cost of items being much greater than they once were and many just do not have the spare cash anymore for outside entertainment.

just the same in the mid 60,s as well. all normal lads were out together on a friday night 7pm till the 1030 closing time then off to the chippy. doubt these things happen now even if they could afford it. more worried about health scares drom alcohol and if its sustainable fish they are eating.

Fish and chips in Seaton was £11.50 last year, decent size fish but a boat load of chips not sure that was to justify the price add that on to couple drinks for and I don’t think you would get much change out of £50.

pre covid you could get a half lot with a splash plus a tea at youngs for two and have change for what you paid for one. know costs have gone up but i,m still not convinced that many places are not trying to make op for what they lost by being forced to close during that period. need to remember it wasn,t the customers but the government that caused that. the big surprise is that more pubs, cafes and restaurants have not closed down. possibly pools being crap is a good thing as many more would like to attend but just could not afford it or spend money they cannot really addord to do.

Yes its the end of an era. I remember the old engine shed and steam shed which was further along towards Church Street. In 1967 me and a mate went in the shed and 63395 Q6 was there on its way to preservation. Its now on the North Yorks Moors Railway.
