I would like to congratulate the organisers of the Supporters Trust for their tenacity in overcoming various obstacles in order to form the Trust. The move to have the Victoria Park declared a community asset was a particularly shrewd move and should give it some protection from speculators. The best of luck to all concerned.
I agree 100% with the aims of the Trust, which are very similar to the aims of the Supporters Association drawn up nearly 30 years ago. I thought it would be an interesting exercise to see if these aims were achieved or are achievable.
1. To improve communications between the club and its supporters.
Communications are a two way thing and unfortunately I.O.R. did not see the need to communicate with supporters, in fact they saw them as a nuisance. Previous chairmen of the club communicated with the S.A., usually when they needed money. Harold Hornsey was an exception. So far Gary Coxall has shown little interest in communicating face to face with supporters. He should have organised a public meeting during the Summer to outline his plans for the club.
2. To strengthen the influence of supporters over the running of the club.
Directors of football clubs are, in the main, wary of supporters and will not allow them to have a say in the running of their football clubs . The only way that supporters can get a say in club affairs if they have a big enough financial clout. That should be the Trust's first priority.
3. To seek fans representation on the board of the club.
The Supporters Association were allowed a representative on the board before I.O.R. However that rep. had to leave the meeting when items deemed too sensitive for the supporters to know about were under discussion. Again the position of the Trust on the board will depend entirely on the size of Trust's bank balance.
4/5 To work with the club towards safeguarding the future of the club and to be there as a safety net.
The S.A. have always endeavoured to help the club as much as possible, despite the antipathy of I.O.R I am sure the Trust will try to do the same. I hope Gary Coxall appreciates their efforts. In the final analysis, money is the key to success. The bigger the bank balance the greater the chance of the ultimate aim of keeping league football in Hartlepool.
My advice to the trust is build up your bank balance as quickly as possible and do not be sidetracked by small projects .The sooner you have a healthy bank balance the sooner you will have real influence. When supporters see that your are determined to achieve your aims then their support will follow.
Thanks for that, much appreciated and I nod my head to your experiences and tenacity over the years.
