in todays game wingers need to do a certain amount of defending but not to the extent they get converted to play that new wing back role thats popular now. remember cleary making some good tackles in chasing back but that was not the main reason we signed him on loan and is a regular now for barnsley. in this pools side he would be remembered for those tackles more than his attacking play. feaths makes sarll look a manager who loves total football.

The wingers were always the talented suppliers of chances for the forwards, nowadays they’re classed as general purpose pick up trucks scuttling up and down the wing by coaches who have more in common putting defence as the cornerstone of a successful team.

So, Jones has gone to Scunny - it appears that Landon has lost the bidding war which is a concern. Still, we have recalled young Foreman from Hebburn so all is well after all. Oh wait a minute, he was just passing through the town to get to Spenny!

No, Landon didnt lose the bidding war, our offer was accepted. I am guessing Scunthorpe also had their bid accepted and the player chose to go to Scunny rather than us.Can you blame him? Join a team who are virually certain to be in the play offs with the chance of FL football or join a team which has virtually no chance of the play off and FL football next year.

Discussions with the managers would've probably gone along the lines of:

Scummy - we want you to play freely on the wing taking on the fullbacks and creating for our forwards (plural) and scoring goals yourself.

Us - we want to keep the ball at all times usually easiest done by playing backwards or if absolutely necessary square, we don't want hopeful crosses for our forward (singular) to be aimlessly trying to get in the end of, you'll need to track back to cover the LB, and you'll be defending our box at set pieces.

This would be the same Scunthorpe who got beat at home by Sutton last night? Just like us. The Scunthorpe who have won once in their last 6?

the main thing to look at is how he does there. if he is a roaring success then fans can knock the club for not increase the bidding. however if it goes the other way with him it would mean the club has been sensible. no matter what scunnys recent form is i,d guess they have a better manager than us and more players who would get in a pools team than the other way round.

With any luck he'll turn out to be as good as the last 'highly rated' NLN player Pools were willing to pay money for: Marcus Carver.

But the publicity was our bid had been accepted by Chester (at least that was my impression). Were we gazumped? I was presuming both bids were acceptable and the player decided which club to join since Chester were happy either way but obviously I was mistaken I hold my hands up. I should have read the Mail article more closely. In my defence the Mail headline was slightly misleading. Yes Scunthorpe's form has dropped recently but they have plenty of points in the bank:13 more than Pools. Not saying they're are world beaters but barring sensational events, they will be in the play offs and Pools wont be.

He’s from Stockport which is much closer to Scunny than we are…and more likely to have a better chance of going up than we are.
I take it he must have checked us out, if he has a brain.

I'm not too upset about it- obviously it was a competitive bid- but not silly money for an unproven player.
We want players who want to be here for the right reasons. Which is why Cal Roberts would be a good signing given his local links and proven quality at this level. He would also appear to be surplus to requirements.
My only reservation would be character wise- whether or not he is trouble off the pitch, though due diligence and our new system would hopefully flag that up. Though rather him than Campbell!

As others have said above- maybe it was partly location and the fact that they are a shoe in for the playoffs- that made Jones' mind up.

I understand Exeter paid a transfer fee but ended up making only 13 appearances over the season….I think I ‘m looking for something to compensate for losing out on a signing.

location will always come into it but then its up to someone at the club to sell the location to players. if we matched the wages of SE based players the money they would get would go much further especially where housing is concerned. we are not exactly asking players to emigrate and without being biased i would prefer to live and bring up kids in the area than somewhere inside london.
