Infamous terrace song subject and murderer dies this week.

In retrospect it was a horrendously bad song.

Pity his victims didn’t get the chance to reach 89.

Agree entirely, I've been around long enough to remember as a kid the song being sung for years at Pools, in the days when we regularly had a police presence as opposed to the current stewards who seem to disappear at the hint of any good old fashioned 'aggro'. Being shot in the eye when simply doing your job questioning a suspect was just about as heinous a crime as you could imagine. Roberts was very lucky to avoid the death penalty which had only recently been abolished at that time. He subsequently lived most of his life in captivity before being released which as you say is a better life than the poor bastards he murdered had - ie no life.

I never liked the way certain sections of the media gave him a sort of celebrity status when he got released…he should have been ignored for what he was.

think it was with football fans more. happened around the time when hooliganism at grounds started to rise with fans having possibly there first interactions with the police.

Much like the Krays and their ilk along with the Essex Boys. All scum to a man but hero worshipped in some quarters. I alsohave a vague recollection about support of Arthur Hutchinson when he was on the run.

Wasn't he caught in a field near Elwick?

Aye, that's right. I remember getting stopped by the police on Elwick Village Green, early hours of the morning - when Hartlepool had a proper police presence - and them searching the car as if I was some form of terrorist.
